Patrick is a 3-inch stuffed bear, one-of-a-kind and different from all other bears in this collection. Wrapped up his cozy quilt and tucked into a comfortable bed, Patrick comes with a personalized wrap and booklet. Patrick is not intended for children under 3 years of age. He is lovingly handmade by Sarah and her friend Little Bear.
This is the first time that Rich Frog is offering a hand-made, one-of-a-kind item. Each of these little bears is unique, and there is only a single one of each bear.
Why Make Bears?
Sarah van Ryckevorsel is Rich Frog’s designer. She started Rich Frog with her husband Maarten more than 20 years ago. As a child, Sarah often made her own toys. Her favorite plaything was a house full of stuffed bears, for whom she made and collected all of the creature comforts that her little bears could possibly need.
How did these Bears in Beds with Blankets come to be?
Always resourceful, Sarah and her friend Little Bear went up to the attic one day to see if they might find some inspiration. Lo and behold, they came across a box of small stuffed bears. Little Bear started to jump up and down from excitement, he was so happy to see his old friends again. “We should get to work,” said Little Bear. “These bears need beds to sleep in, and quilts to keep them warm.” Little Bear knows what bears want.
A New Look for the Bears
Sarah noticed how beautifully made these bears were, and seeing the craftsmanship, she knew that Little Bear was right to be excited. So she replaced the eyes and noses of each one of these 3-inch bears to give each one a distinct and personal expression.
Together, Sarah and Little Bear gathered up all the little scraps of fabric that they could find. Sarah told Little Bear how the fabrics had come from her sewing projects, and from her mother’s sewing projects and even from her grandmother’s sewing projects. She explained that most of the fabrics had come from the Old Bennington Country Store in Bennington, Vermont, where Sarah’s mother had worked in the 1970’s. Little Bear carefully cut out twelve 1-inch squares for each quilt. He insisted that each combination of fabrics be completely different from all the other quilts, and he thought hard about which bear should have which quilt.
Making the Beds
Using old wooden rulers (Sarah and Maarten make the Rulers of the World, so in their house there are always a lot of surplus wooden rulers around), Sarah and Little Bear built a bed for each bear. Little Bear found many different colors of paint in the basement, and he volunteered to paint all the beds. But it was a lot of painting, so he asked Sarah to help. Little Bear thought hard about what color bed each of the bears should have.
