Civil War Generals Pair

Packaged set of two paired 12” wooden rulers, made in U.S.A. of American-grown basswood.

The American Civil War (1861-1865), fought between the northern and the southern United States, began primarily as a result of the long-standing controversy over the enslavement of black people. Rulers of the South is a list of generals who lead troops from the South, or Confederacy. The image at the top of the ruler is Robert E. Lee (1807-1870), originally commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, and ultimately general-in-chief all the Confederate armies. Our image is based on a photograph of Lee taken in 1863 or 1864 by Julian Vannerson (1827-after 1875).

Rulers of the North is a list of generals who lead troops from the North, or Union. The image at the top of the ruler is Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) who commanded the victorious Union Army, and went on to become President. His nickname “Unconditional Surrender”, comes of course from his initials, which may also stand for “United States”. His body is entombed in New York City. Our image is based on a pre-1864 photograph attributed to the studio of Mathew Brady (1822-1896).

The two rulers are packaged together in a sleeve with a beautifully designed and printed backer card that provides additional information about the rulers and the images we’ve printed on them. The set makes a terrific gift!
